It is demonstrated that the high resolution time-frequency analysis of the microphone signal by the smoothed pseudo Wigner distribution (SPWD) shows responses of the vocal tract to both, the glottal closure and the glottal opening. Thus, a convolution-based model for the relation between the laryngograph signal and the microphone signal is evaluated. It turns out, that the microphone signal may be viewed as ltered version of a power function of the laryngograph signal. Hence, such a nonlinear processed laryngograph signal may be an appropriate model for the acoustic excitation of the vocal tract.

Regulation of glottal closure and airflow in a three-dimensional phonation model: implications for vocal intensity control.
Maintaining a small glottal opening across a large range of voice conditions is critical to normal voice production. This study investigated the effectiveness of vocal fold approximation and stiffening in regulating glottal opening and airflow during phonation, using a three-dimensional numerical model of phonation. The results showed that with increasing subglottal pressure the vocal folds wer...
متن کاملCorrespondence between the glottal gesture overlap pattern and vowel devoicing in Japanese
Correspondence between the glottal opening gesture pattern and vowel devoicing in Japanese was examined using PGG with special reference to the pattern of glottal gesture overlap and blending into the neighboring vowel. The results showed that most of the tokens demonstrated either a single glottal opening pattern with a devoiced vowel, or a double glottal opening with a voiced vowel during /Ci...
متن کاملDetection of glottal opening instants using Hilbert envelope
The objective of this work is to develop an automatic method for estimating glottal opening instants (GOIs) using Hilbert envelope (HE). The GOIs are secondary major excitations after glottal closure instants (GCIs) during the production of voiced speech. The HE is defined as the magnitude of complex time function (CTF) of a given signal. The unipolar property of HE is exploited for picking the...
متن کاملGlottal closure and opening detection for flexible parametric voice coding
The knowledge of glottal closure and opening instants (GCI/GOI) is useful for many speech analysis applications. A Pitchsynchronous waveform encoding of voice is one such application. In this paper, a dynamic programming is employed to solve for the global close/open phase segmentation based on the polynomial parametric waveform of the derivative glottal waveform and its quasi-periodicity. Not ...
متن کاملOn the use of the derivative of electroglottographic signals for characterization of nonpathological phonation.
Electroglottography is a common method for providing noninvasive measurements of glottal activity. The derivative of the electroglottographic signal, however, has not attracted much attention, although it yields reliable indicators of glottal closing instants. The purpose of this paper is to provide a guide to the usefulness of this signal. The main features that are to be found in this signal ...
